积极性决定未来成功。在英语课上，小林老师曾经对我们说过，西方鼓励的平等是更多的是机会平等，过程靠我们自己努力，结果由我们自己承担。而我们以前可能太注重结果平等。这是文化差异。我从中得到的启发式：我们要多多激发自己的主动性，抓住机会，敢于发表自己的观点，才能真正成功。
Initiative determines the success or the failure of the future. In the class, Mr. Mao once told us that inthe western they cultivate a kind of equality of the beginning. They struggle through the process and pay for the results. But in China we care more about the equality of the results. Then it requires us to stimulate our initiative,point out our views bravely and only in this way can we really succeed.
词汇量对于英语学习十分重要。只有扩大我们的词汇量，才能去更深刻、更完整地理解英文文章。同时，在理解单词表面意思的同时，我们也需要结合语境关注字词背后的深邃的意义。
The vocabulary plays a very important role in English study. Only by expanding the vocabulary can we comprehend the essays more deeply and integrally. Meanwhile, while understandingthe superficial meaning of a word, we should also pay attention to the meaning behind with comprehension of the context. （潘 审阅 ）

在这学期里，我在英语学习中最大的收获是单词量的增长以及找寻到正确的学习方法。我在高中没有系统性学习英语，因此我的英语基础十分薄弱。我也曾想补英语，但是始终没有找到正确方法。最后我失去了信心，也放弃了补习。
但是这学期之后我找到了属于自己的英语学习方法:阅读英语书，看英语电影以培养我的语感；最重要的是做练习以提高自己的答题技巧。我们做的单词训练让我把英语词汇和西语词汇联系起来，对于我来说这是很有用的。我认为这样的方式对加强我的英语能力大有裨益。
During this semester，my biggest harvest in the English learning is the increase of my vocabulary and find the right way of my English learning. in middle school I did not learn English systematically，somy English basis is very weak. I used to try to make up for my English. but Inever find my way to learn it. Finally, I lost my confidence and abandoned it.
But after this semester,I have found my way to learn English: reading English books, watching some English movies to form my languagesense and the most important thing is to do exercise to promote my exam skill.the words exercises that we do help me relate those English words with Spanish words, which is quite useful for me. this semester I have gained a lot of new English words. I think that this system should go along way to strengthen my English capability.
Although Ifailed in the mid-term exam，Rome was not built in a day, I need to trust the process. I believe that if I insist on study in this way, I will achieve the goal.

古有言云：“不积跬步，无以至千里。”同样的道理，英语学习也需要我们循序渐进，这就需要有一些适合我们的方法，坚定的信念和持之以恒的毅力。在这三个月的英语学习中，我收获了很多非常有用的学习方式，然而，其中最重要便是词汇。
我的英语教师强调的最重要的几个观点之一，也是留给我印象最深刻的一句话便是，词汇是学习语言的基础。于是，我开始逐渐关注重视我的词汇量。如果说英语是一栋建筑，那么词汇就是那栋建筑的一砖一瓦。如果没有足够的砖是没有办法完成一栋建筑的。词汇于英语学习而言，就像是砖瓦之于建筑。有些人认为记单词太难，太耗时,但它却是不可或缺。总结来说，每一件事情都需要汗水来成就。未来的某一天，或许我会感激现在努力的自己。 （审阅：孙）
As the oldsaying goes: Rome was not built in one day. Likewise, English learning also needsus to proceed step by step in an orderly way which requires suitable methods,conviction and perseverance. And during the past three months of Englishlearning, I have gained a lot of useful stuff. There is, however, one gain that matters to me most , i.e. vocabulary.
Vocabulary is the foundation of language learning. This is one of the most importantpoints that my English professor emphasizes all the time and it left a deep impression on me. Therefore, I started to gradually pay more attention to my vocabulary.Because If English is a building, then vocabulary is like its bricks and tiles.If you don't get enough bricks and tiles, you won’t be able to finish the building. The way English learning needs vocabulary is like the way building needs bricks and tiles. Of course, some people will find memorizing words and enlarging vocabulary too hard and time-consuming. However, it cannot be omitted.
To sum up, everything needs effort to achieve. And I’m sure that someday in the future, I will be grateful for my hard work today.

高中时我习惯于为了满足高考的要求来学习英语，采取的背诵单词的方式较为机械，也并没有刻意着力培养演讲的能力。而过去三个月，对我来说最重要的便是明白了背单词不应因为某场考试的结束而终止，同时需要采取科学的记忆术，例如记忆常用的词根以及对形似或含义相近的单词进行比较等等。
其次便是，若不具有将心中所思与纸上所写转化为流利自信的口头表达的能力是十分悲哀的，我学会了努力去克服害羞，成为一个敢于开口语言学习者而不是只会考试的考生。
When I wasin high school, I got used to learning English to satisfy the needs of thecollege entrance examination and to reciting words in a mechanical way. However, during the past three months, the most important thing to me was, I have learned that we shouldn'tstop reciting words just because one or two examinations are over. At the same time, we need to take scientific mnemonics such as to memorize frequently-used etymologies and to compare the words which are similar in for more meaning and so on.
Secondly, it’s sad if we failed to own the ability of transforming what we think and write to fluent and confident oral expressions. I have learned to try my best to overcome my shyness and to be a language learner who has the courage to speak English instead of being one examinee who just knows how to take examinations. （钱 审阅）

在本学期的英语精读课的内容中，有两点使我获益最多。第一点是我们要在阅读过程中进行批判性思考。这一点不可或缺，主要在于，在思考文章内容，语法，词汇，句型等方面的问题时，亦是在进行深度阅读，从而能帮助我更好地理解文章。
另一点则是增加对于当地文化的了解。我逐渐发展了一个越来越成熟的英语国家的视角并且更加熟悉这些本土俚语和用法。当我了解这些之后，才能更加深入的挖掘文章内涵并且真正学到有价值的东西。
Among whatl have learned in the English intensive reading course in this semester, thereare two things that benefit me most. The first one is that l should hold acritical attitude in the process of reading. What makes it indispensable is that，by thinking critically, I can understand the passage’s content, grammar, vocabulary, sentence pattern and soon better.
The other point l want to illustrate is that through the course, the span of knowledge about local culture will expand. I gradually developed an increasingly sophisticated perspective of these English-speaking countries and got more familiar with those native slangs and usages. Some native slangs and special usages with which the language learners are unfamiliar tend to be used frequently in writing.
Only when l have a good knowledge of these above, can l attach to the core meaning of the passage and learn something really important. （审阅者：潘）

这学期我在英语精读课上学到的最重要的一点就是保持谦逊，把自己放在一个较低的位置。其实很多人不敢犯错是因为害怕别人会对他们做出负面的评价，可是一旦我们把自己放在很低的位置，我们就可以把每一次的交流都当做一次提高，可以更虚心地接受别人给的建议，正如苏格拉底所说的“我只知道一件事，就是我一无所知”。
The most important point I havelearned in English classes this semester is to be modest and to put myself in alower position. Many people, actually, are afraid of making mistakes because of worrying about the comments made by others. However, once we put ourselves in a low position, every communication can be considered as an improvement and all the advice can be taken more humbly. As Socrates says, “The only thing I know is that I know nothing.” （朱审阅）

虽然只上了短短三个月的基础英语课，但是毛老师的一些话语却可以影响我很久很久。
情商高的人总是受欢迎的。无论知识面多么宽广，不会做人的人就如同一颗大型气球，一扎就破。要做一个谦卑的人，不要害怕出错。我们出错是为了改变，为了下次做得更好。假如学习英语是一场战争，那么词汇量就是对一个人最有利的武器。学习语言是一个长久的持续的过程，如果一天不用英语，那么就会有一定的退步，更不用说长久不使用英语说话了。尊重每一个人，认真对待他人的劳动成果才能让别人认真对待自己。
Though I have been attending the English class for only three months, some of Mr. Mao’s words influence me for a long time. A person with a high EQ is always popular. Nomatter how wide one`s range of knowledge is a person with bad manners is like ahuge balloon, which can be pricked easily. Be a modest person and don`t be afraid of making mistakes. We make mistakes in order to change ourselves and make abetter job next time. Suppose learning English is a war, then the vocabularywould be the weapon in a person`s best interest. Learning English is a long and sustaining process. If you stop learning it for a day, you`ll move in reverse, notto mention for a long time. Respect every individual because if you want to be respectable, you should be respectful to others` work.

首先，我在课堂中最大的收获是掌握了词根的使用。说实话，在中学期间，背诵英语单词的唯一方法就是不断重复默写，不断反复。相比之下,在学习了根据词根来联想的方法之后，感觉是理解了单词再去背诵的，在背诵托福一万的过程中，词根记忆法也大大地提高了我的效率。
其次,在这个学期的学习中，我不仅学到了新的学习方法，也在思想和视野方面得到了提高。之前的英语学习对我来说都是为了考试而做准备，但在英语精读课上，我意识到语言是文化和思想的载体，通过老师课堂上的衍生，我也看到了文化之间的矛盾和差别,也为我提供了另一个视角来看待现在的世界格局。
First of all, the most impressive benefit from the class is the usage of the word root. To tell the truth, during the period of middle school, the only way to recite English words is to write from memory repeatedly, again and again. By contrast, after learning the way to memorize words by associating with their roots, it feelslike I bear them in mind by understanding them, which tremendously boosted my efficiency in the course of reciting VOCABULARY.
Secondly, during the study of this semester, not only do I learn new method to study English, but also it nourishes my thought and broadens my horizons. In thepast, to some degree, the study of English is just for the exam in my perspective. But in this class, it comes to me that language is the carrier of culture and perception. Through the derivation in the class, I see the contradictions and differences between cultures, and it also provides me with another perspective to view the current world pattern.（邵 审阅）

在这个学期的英语课中，我学习到了很多东西，但最重要的有以下两点：一是我学习到了如何做一个优秀的演讲者。在演讲的过程中， 我需要的不仅仅是英语发音的标准和演讲的流畅，更需要感情和感染力去吸引我的听众保持聆听状态并且理解我想要表达的思想和情感。
二是作为一名译者，仅仅掌握语法和词汇是不够的，更需要充分了解语言文化背景和将这种语言作为母语的人的思维方式，跳出直译的束缚，才能将它地道的翻译出来。
I have learned many things from the English class in this semester. But there are twopoints on top of them. The first one is that I learned how to be an excellent publicspeaker. In the process of the speech, not only do I need to pronounce accurately and speak fluently but also to use my emotion and passion to attractthe attention of my audience and get myself understood.
Secondly, as a translator, merely having a good command of gramma and vocabulary isapparently not enough. We had better comprehend the cultural background of the language andthe thinking patterns of the native speakers. Only in this way canwe shake off the yoke of literal translation and make them the veritable ones. (邵 审阅）

直到我上周演讲的时候，我才意识到这门课对我来说比我曾认为的更重要。参与度将是我以后会更加重视的事情。
跟我在其他大学学习小语种的同学比起来，我们有英语课已经是很幸运了。事实上，我学的西班牙语更多，我学到的英语也就更多，反之亦然。这两者的关系是相辅相成而不是相互阻碍。多亏了我的英语老师，我现在对于词根有了更深刻的理解。这个方法对于西语学习和英语学习都将会是非常有用的。
Until thevery moment I gave my speech last week that I realized this class means muchmore important to me than I thought it was. Participation is the thing that I will paymore attention to in the days to come.
Comparing myself to my friend in other university who study minority language, we arejust lucky to have English class. Actually, the more I learned Spanish, the more I learned English, vice versa. The relationship between them is like boosting each other up instead of dragging each other down. Thanks to my teacher, now I have a deeper understanding ofthe word roots. 在这学期的课上，一半学生进行了命题演讲。我并不擅长公开演讲。当我将自己平凡的表现和别人相比而沮丧时，毛老师说：只要你尽力，你就是最棒的自己。这极大地鼓励了我。的确，语言学习的意义不在于打败别人，而在于超越自己。
广泛阅读
作为大学生，我们不能再把阅读限定在课本中。毛老师总在群里分享涉及不同领域的阅读材料。多样的演讲主题也开阔了我的视野。在毛老师的课上，我学到的不仅是英语这门语言，更是对现代世界热点问题的不同视角。
As long as you try your best,you are the best of yourself.
In the classes of this term, half of the students gave a speech about a certain topic.I am not good at speaking in public. When I compared my ordinary performance with others’ and felt upset, Mr. Mao said: as long as you try your best, you are the best ofyourself. This encouraged me a lot. Indeed, the aim of language learning doesn’t lie on beating others, but on overtaking yourself.
Read extensively.
As university students, we should not limit our reading in textbooks any more. Mr.Mao always shares reading materials involving different fields in our life in our chatting group. The various topics of speeches have also broadened my horizon. In Mr. Mao’s class, I have learnt not only the English language, but also different perspectiveson the hot issues going on in our modern world.

初上英语精读课时，我发现我的词汇量和高水平同学的一比实在相形见绌，这让我很惶恐。我想努力缩小差距，可该怎么做？毛老师说：“功夫在课后”。 根据您的建议，我买了托福词汇手册，之后按照您所说的词根记忆法，自己课后坚持每天背60个生词，并且课上还有很多机会做不少词汇测试，温故又知新。这个做法真的很有效。
此外，给我留下深刻印象的是，小林老师经常会在赏析课文时穿插一些关于美国选举制度、政治形态、文化历史和宗教的知识，非常自然，毫不生硬，引人入胜，不仅使有些枯燥的课文更有趣，也拓宽了我的视野，使我能从更客观的角度看美国。
The first time I attended the English Intensive Reading Course, I found that I had alimited vocabulary by comparison with those classmates at high proficiencylevel, which really panicked me. I want to try my best to narrow the gap, butwhat should I do? Mr. Mao said: "What you have learnt at class is far from enough; how hardyou study after class is the key to success."
According to his suggestion, I bought the TOEFL Vocabulary Handbook. Afterwards, Ipersevere in reciting 60 new words every day after class on the basis of rootword memorial method that you taught us. Besides, you offer us opportunities todo vocabulary tests in class to help us review. Meanwhile, learn something new,which is quite effective.
In addition,what impresses me most is that you often add some knowledge about American electoral system, political form, culture, history and religion when explaining and appreciating articles, which is very natural and attractive. Not only doyou make some boring texts more interesting, but also expand my horizon and lead me to view theUnited States from a more objective perspective.（审阅：郑）

在课堂上,我收获最大的一点是我懂得了在大学的学习生活需要我们主动地去提升自己而不是被动的接受知识.无论是在课堂上还是课下都有很多的提升自己的机会，例如同学演讲完之后给予评价，参与每一次的翻译作业。不要害怕别人的眼光，因为成长永远是自己的事情。只有勇敢的去说去做才能发现问题，提升自己。毛老师给大家提供了许多对我们受益匪浅的资源和机会，我们要做的就是在接下来的学习中好好利用这些,才能更好的提升自己。
What impressed me most from the classes is that the study at university calls for activelearner instead of the passive knowledge receivers. There are plenty of opportunities for you to grasp to develop yourself whether it is in class or after class, for instance, volunteering to be the judges after the speeches of others, participate in every translation assignment. There is no need of caring about others opinion, because growth is your own business. You can’t break through yourself if you don’t take the opportunity to practice. Ourteacher offers us plentiful chances and resources, which is pretty beneficial. Only when we make good use of these things, can we improve ourselves better. （陆 审阅）

本学期的英语课我受益匪浅，其中我认为 “追求完美” 是可以使我受益一生的。 在我们做词汇测试的时候，我们关心的不仅仅是某一个单词，而是追根溯源并了解它的所有变体。
小林老师精心为我们挑选演讲主题，确保我们或听或讲，总能真正有所收获；而我们也不为完成认为而做演讲，我们从TED上模仿演讲的状态。这样的精益求精也同样适用于我们做课本翻译时。我这才发现了我存在的局限性。若想将自己的英语水平甄于完美还需要付出很多努力。现在开始也不算太晚。毛老师一直说，就把自己想象成最差的学生吧，这样你就会竭尽全力了。
Among all things I learned in English class this semester, I valued one most: the attitude to approach perfection. When we were doing the words test, it was not only one pacific word that we should pay attention to, but the root and the derivation. When it came to the speech, Professor Mao chose the topic deliberately to make sure we could learn something from either preparing it or just appreciating it. And we went waybeyond a plain speech.
On the contrary, we were recommended to watch TED and imitated their performance. Same rules applied when we did the translation of the textbook. That’s how I found mylimitation. It takes a lot to perfect my English. It was never to late tostart. As professor Mao said: imagine yourself as the least superior student class, in that case you will never stop striving for the best. （审阅者：郑）

这学期我在英语精读课上学到的最有益的一点是: 语言表达能力只有在运用语言时才会得到提升，所以要经常说英语。 这是我在准备演讲的时候感受到的。一次演讲并不只是背出你写的文章这么简单，但其实却调动起了你埋藏已久的词汇量和语法知识，以及现场发挥。另外，要相信自己可以比想象中做的更好。只有抱着这种信念，才会有不断提升自己的动力。
The most beneficial thing I have learned from English intensive reading is that language competence can beimproved only when you use it, which is the reason why we have to speak English more often. I realized it when I was preparing for the speech, which actually mobilized your vocabulary and grammar instead of being as simple as reciting an article that you’ve written. Besides, only when you have the faiththat you can do better than your imagination will you gain the motivation to improving yourself.

在过去三个月的英语学习中，我学到最重要的是要多讲多练，不断地挑战自己。毛老师总会在每节课上留充足的时间给演讲者演讲，评委评论，同学讨论。演讲对同学们而言不只是一项任务，更意味着深挖议题、准备、练习、全新的体验甚至是挑战（鉴于有些同学害怕或从没做过演讲）、向其他同学学习的机会。毛老师在课上也总是鼓励同学们多讲，大声讲，我非常赞同他因为想要掌握一门语言是没有捷径的，练习就是唯一的方法。而只要我们尽力了，我们就是最棒的。
During the past three months of English learning, what I think is the most important thing that I learned is to speak more and keep challenging myself. Professor Mao will always leave enough time for the speaker to present his speech, three judges tomake their comments, other students to discuss about the topic. For us students, a speech is not just an assignment that needs to be done with, it’s more about deep excavation, previous preparation, continuous practice, brand new experience maybe even self challenge (since some students are afraid of or new to public speaking) and opportunities to learn from others.
In the class,Professor Mao always encourages us to speak out aloud and speak more, encourages us to “volunteer.” And I couldn’t agree with him more because there is no shortcut whenwe’re trying to master a language, practicing is the only way. And as long as we try our best, we’re the best.

经过反复思考，我认为在英语课上最大的收获是获得了一个更开阔的眼界。我明白了大学生活不应只包括语言的学习，我们还应当“家事国事天下事，事事关心”。几乎每节课上毛老师都会讲到国外的形势、政策以及一些有趣的新闻，这向我们描绘了一幅异国生活的图景并在我们心中打开了一扇窗。诚然，作为刚摆脱了无尽考试的大学生，我们中的大多数不可避免地拥有一个狭隘的眼界，而这些政治历史知识恰好能填补我们思想上的空虚，也让我们更加适应变幻莫测的未来。总之，我真的在英语课上学受益匪浅。
After thinking it over, I consider a wider horizon as my greatestgain from the English class. l was taught that my college life should contain not only language learning, but also paying attention to family,society and the whole world. In almost every class, Professor Mao would talk about the situations, policies and some funny news abroad, which described apicture of foreign life and opened a window in our hearts. Honestly speaking, as freshmen who have just got rid of endless exams, most of us unavoidably have a pretty narrow horizon. So the knowledge of politics and history can just fill the emptiness in our minds, which also enables us to adapt to the unpredictable future. 中学里我面临更多的是应试性质的英语考试。我所接受的翻译训练是要稳，甚至死板。做中译英时，语法、词汇正确即可得分；并且，中译英、英译中的习题都是没有上下文的独立句子。然而，大学英语课让我对翻译有了重新的认识：翻译是一项灵活，甚至带有艺术性的工作——在正确的基础上，还有精确、地道、传神。好的词汇选择，巧妙地通过语法结构改变语序，以及联系上下文完整地理解往往能使一句翻译变得更精确、精彩、有深度，这才是翻译的精髓，也是挑战性所在。
I was trained to be stable and rather rigid when facing the translation part of the English exams. Translating Chinese into English simply meant writing down the right words and choosing the right expression, and then the points would be inhand. Also, there was no context for us to refer to since those sentences that required translating between English and Chinese were entirely separated from their origins. However, translation has turned into a brand new concept for me thanksto the English classes at college: It has become a work of flexibility, and even more，a work of art--on thebasis of being ''right", it still can be improved to be accurate, to beidiomatic and even vivid. A great work of translation with not only accuracy, but even highlights and depth, consists of a smart choice of lexicon,some subtle changes in the word order with the help of those grammatical rules, and a comprehensive understanding of the context. And that is precisely wherethe genuine core of translation as well as its challenge lies. （审阅者：孙）

在大一上半学期的英语精读课期间，收获颇多。除了必要的课内学习外，老师提供的演讲机会和10000托福单词背诵大大提升了我的演讲能力和词汇量。口语与背诵美文是解决“开口难”问题的有效方法。同时，也使我对于学习习惯和方法有了更深的认识和改进。唯有不断训练才能使自己的能力不断提升。语言的掌握是一个积累的过程，只有不怕犯错，不断运用语言，才能取得最大的进步。我的目标是，逐渐培养出英语思维，即使脑中中英翻译的过程缩短，形成条件反射。
During my first semester in the English intensive reading class, I’ve learnt a lot. Despite the compulsory in-class learning, the chance to deliver a speech in public andrecite TOEFL vocabulary offered greatly enhanced my public speaking skills and my vocabulary, which is a feasible solution to the unwillingness to speak English in public. Meanwhile, it also helps me develop a deeper understanding of how to learn English and thus improving myself in the daily practice. Practice makes perfect. The apprehension of language is a process of accumulation.
Only by trial and error, using language constantly can we make progress. My goal is to gradually form the habit of thinking in English, which is to say, to shorten the process inside my brain of translating Chinese into English and thus forming a conditioned reflex that whatever the situation is, my English would pop out as long as I speak it. （顾 审）

在这学期的英语学习中，我学到的不仅仅是单词，语法以及怎样用更简易的词组解释晦涩的单词......当然，以上这些，对我现在以及未来的学习都有着非常大的帮助，这是毋庸置疑的！同时也是老师您教会了我语言的融会贯通性。但是，我觉得这学期学习最大的收获却是那些您平时在上课时给我们所讲，所渗透的那些知识以及文化。从美国的选举制度到中国的历史文化；从鲜为人知的传说到各个国家的法律制度......这些，都是我以前闻所未闻的！所以，是您为我打开了新世界的窗口，开阔了我的视野，丰富了我的知识。这些，都是在普通英语课上没有的。所以，我觉得这就是我在这一学期学到的最重要的东西！
In this semester of English learning, I have learnt more than just words, grammar andhow to use simple phrases to explain obscure words...Of course, all of theseare very helpful to my present and future studies, without any doubt. At thesame time, it’s you who taught me how to integrate my English with Spanish. However, I think the greatest benefit I got from this semester isthose knowledge and culture that you usually tell us during the class. From theUnited States’ Election System to China’s History and Culture; From lesser-known legend to legal system of various countries...These are the thingsthat I have never heard of. In those ways, you opened the window of a new world to me, broadened my horizons and enriched my knowledge. All of these cannot befound in the normal English class. And I think this is the most important thingI learned in this semester.

这个学期过得很快。毛老师的英语精读课程也将暂时告一段落。在这一学期中，我感受到了了大学英语的魅力。得益于毛老师独特的教学理念，我没有落入哑巴英语的陷阱。而是知道了灵活运用的重要性。对我而言，最重要的有两点：
一、词汇量是大部分英语能力的根基。正如小林老师朋友圈中所说：“词汇量是大爷”我认为，只有让这位大爷从敌人变成助手，你的英语水平才能有全方位的提高。

How quickly has passed this term! So, does the English intensive reading course taught by Mr. Mao. In this semester, I was fascinated by this course and some feature of it appealed to me.
Having benefitted from Mr. Mao’s unique teaching philosophy，I didn’t appeal to the so-called dumb English. On the contrary, I was acquainted with the indispensable of applying what I have learned. To me, I consider two aspects important.
The first, of course, is the vocabulary. It is the foundation of the most of your English skills. Just as the passage in Mr. Mao’s moments in WeChat: the vocabulary is the King. In my opinion, only when you turn it from a bad master to a goodservant can you enhance your language skills in the round.
The secondis also very helpful. Mr. Mao indicates that language is meant to be used and practiced. In that case, we should practice talking more frequently. Mr. Mao attaches so much importance to our speeches all the time and he always makes elaborate comments on each speaker, which broaden and deepen our thought greatly. Besides, he refines our presentation skills. I have learned a lot about, for example, how to combine your words and your body languages or how to let the audience pay more attention to you.
I am amazed by his academic excellence and what’s more, his ideas and good manners. He mentioned from time to time that our respect to others is so important, such as those speakers. （金 审阅）

在本学期的英语精读课中，我学习到的最重要的一点是演讲的技巧。曾经的我演讲如同机械式地背书，毫无情感可言。老师和同学们给了我很多建议例如学会适当停顿，与观众进行眼神交流，在黑板上写下关键的词汇等等，而且在许多优秀的同学在演讲时也充分展示了如何得体地使用这些技巧，给我做了很好的榜样，帮助我以后能更自信地站在讲台前，更自然地表达我的观点，做更好的演讲。
The mostimportant thing I learned in the English extensive reading class this semester is the skills of making an effecive speech. I used todeliver a speech without any passion just like reciting the textbook. My teacher and classmates have given me a lot of useful suggestions, such as making proper pauses, making eye contact with the audience, writing down somekey points on the blackboard and so on. Besides, many excellent students also demonstrated how to adapt those skills appropriately to their speeches. During my study in the English intensive reading class this term, I think one of the most important things I have learned is to realize the importance of vocabulary. I changed the way that I memorized words. Instead of just reading them over and overagain without thinking, I find it easier for me to relate these words and their meanings if I pay more attention to roots and affixes. Through my new way of memorizing new words, I strongly feel that my vocabulary is greatly enlarged, and I have a better sense of language. Vocabulary plays such an important rolein English study, only with which can I express meanings more precisely, can Iuse English more skillfully, naturally and can I speak more rigidly rather than confining myself to the textbook. （阅者 陈）

I really acquired a lot during the English course this semester, which can be boileddown to the following points. First, I learned the importance of word root for improving myvocabulary through the vocabulary quiz in every class. There are many words with the same root carefully selected by mates in these quizzes and the teacher would make explanation about them relatively. By learning a great number ofroots and affixes, I greatly improved my efficiency of memorizing new words.Secondly, through many exercises of translation between Chinese and English, I enhanced my ability of translation. Meanwhile, by translating the sentences with metaphor, pun, parallelism, my translation quality also acquired improvement, which benefited me a lot. （阅者：高）

Through this semester's study, my biggest achievement is to exercise my speaking ability. Although itis not my turn to make speech yet, longtime preparation and psychological construction have greatly strengthened my heart. Through repeated practices, I have improved my spoken English and the ability to communicate in English. Listening and understanding abilities are also improved when listening to other students' speeches. I have benefited a lot from the English learning of this semester. Firstly, because ofthe vivid teaching methods, I mastered the way of memorizing words quickly, which may be themost important part in English learning. Time flies! Here comes the end of the semester. In Mr. Mao’s class, I have benefited a lot. Then I want to talk about the two most important aspects of what I have learned. Duringthe English class this semester, I have benefitted a lot.
Firstly, the vocabulary test before class enables each student to communicate his ideas to the whole class. The most important thing I have ever learned from this class in this semester is to think deeply about every superficial phenomenon. Take myself as an example, I will never truly know why history is important to us, nomatter individually or nationally, until I did the speech myself, going throughall the reference materials or information and structuring them. When I’m thinking about every topic, I did not only act as a learner, but also ahuman being who cares about the future and the development of this world.
Thanks to my English teacher and those companions who debated and discussed sincerely in the class, which makes me harvest more than the use of language or the achievement of a large vocabulary, more precious, the deep thought into adiverse world constructed by English which involvesproblems about religion, politics and culture.

The English class of this semester mean a lot to me. As a Spanish learner, I always worry that my English is becoming worse while improving my Spanish. AndI cannot conceal the fact that it is happening. I learnt a lot this semester. Instead of only focusing on the textbook, Mr. Mao asked us to do speeches, broaden our vocabulary through quizzes contributedby our classmates and recommend us a good vocabulary book. Doing speech is actually my favorite part, though preparing it is not an easy work, Istill regard it as a priceless opportunity for me to practice my oral English and help me to find my “old feelings” of English. During the English intensive reading class of this semester，I found that active learning out of the classis the most significant thingI learned. Mr. Mao gave us excellent suggestions that making full use of the TOEFL vocabulary book and the reading book of beautiful essays to make up for the defect of classroom learning. Also, we were motivated to pay close attention to the accurate translation of different sentences. I am fully aware that in the way of learning English, only learning in class and being a passive learner is totally not enough, instead, a positive learning out of the class is a thing what we are really supposed to do.（傅 审阅）

时光荏苒，我在上外的第一个学期已接近尾声。在一周两次的英语精读课中，我收获了许多对我今后学习都非常重要的东西。首先，我学到了如何通过构词法来扩充词汇量。在我的高中时光里，我绞尽脑汁来用抄写、联想的方式背诵单词，然而收效甚微。正是由于没有掌握正确的方法，才让我背的这么惨。英语单词并非随意创作的产物，他们是有逻辑的。因此也应该有逻辑地背诵单词。通过构词法，扩充词汇量变得更加容易。
同时，我也发觉寻找单词之间的内在联系也是苦中有乐的。此外，通过听同学所做的演讲，并自己亲手完成一份演讲，我学会了如何准备、以及如何在观众面前做一份演讲。在准备演讲的过程中，我花了很长时间找资料、整理逻辑、斟酌词句。我也花费了一些精力在练习上。总之，作为大学生必备的技能，演讲能力的重要性不言而喻。当然，在学习过程中我也遇到了许多麻烦。然而，正如诗人屈原所言：“路漫漫修远兮，吾将上下而求索。”不论遇到什么挑战，我也不会放弃。（孙 审阅）
As time goes on, my first term in SISU is drawing to an end. During the English class, I have harvested many important things which contribute to my further study. First of all, I learned how to expand my vocabulary by word formation. During my high school years, I racked my brains trying to recite words, by copying, by associations . . . However, they seldom work. It is the ignorant of a better method that makes me so miserable. Since English words are not created optionally, they are logical beings. So there exists a logical way to recite them. By applying word formation, it’s much easier to broaden my vocabulary, and I found it a bit interesting to find the inherent connections between the words.
Secondly, by listening to the speeches delivered by my classmates, and making it by myself, I understood how to compose a speech, and, most importantly, how to deliver it more effectively to the audience. For me,it’s a real challenge since I had never addressed a speech, in a foreign language, to such a number of people. During the speech writing, I spent muchtime in searching for the information, shaping my ideas and measuring words inorder to polish it. And it also drains energy to practice. All in al, as an essential skill for college students, so its importance is self-evident. Ofcourse, I also met much challenge during the study, but just as what the honored poet Qu yuan once wrote:” The road ahead is long and endless, yet high and low I will search with my will unbending.” No matter what challenge I metwith, I will never give up learning.

在这学期我所学到的知识中, 最让我印象深刻的是修辞的运用。我从未想到过我曾经认为直白的英语可以被如此委婉地使用。只有当你知道很多关于西方文化的东西, 你才能理解一些句子, 例如, 我的邮箱有一个农村地址。我学到的第二个重要方面是意译, 即译者不应局限于原文, 这样作者的思想才能很好地传达给读者。为要使词意贴切, 可以借用成语, 甚至改变文本结构。它需要的, 不仅仅是大量的词汇更是文化功底。总而言之，语法和词汇固然必不可少, 但文学素养以及对文化的理解更为重要。(审阅：孙)
Among all I have learned duringthis semester, what impresses me most is use of the rhetoric. It never occurred to me that English which I once considered direct can be used so euphemistically. Only when you know a lot about the western culture can you understand some phrases, such as, my mailbox had a rural address. The second important aspect I learned is how to paraphrase, which means that translators should not belimited to the original text so that the idea of the author can be well communicated to the reader. To make the words involuntary, one can refer to the Chinese idioms and even change the form of the text. It requires more knowledgeof cultural background than merely a large vocabulary. Overall, the grammar and vocabulary are the indispensable foundation, but the understanding of the culture and literature quality truly makes more sense. |
